This is Bud. Bud was an American, and he built our stage. Not single-handedly, and I’m not sure if he was officially in charge of the whole construction project, but he always seemed to be in charge in every practical way, and it was his broad range of construction skills and hard work that made it as good as it was. He seemed to be a really nice and gentle guy, but I don’t think I ever had a personal conversation with him that lasted more than a few seconds, because he had a stage to build and he didn’t waste a lot of time in small talk with people who weren’t builders.
My understanding is that Bud turned up on the Isle of Wight several months before the Festival was due to start because he had helped build the stage at Woodstock the year before. He had a very good understanding why that stage didn’t work very well, and he wanted our stage to be much better.
Which it was, for reasons that I’ll explain later.
