The original Jethro Tull died in 1741. He was a technological pioneer who helped to revolutionise British agriculture. The other Jethro Tull was born in 1967 and is still going strong.
Perhaps harking back to the old rural roots of the band’s namesake, Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson presented himself as a sort of crazy pied piper, a prancing and dancing medieval minstrel, in his suede kneeboots and tattered and chequered pixie coat. One of the few rock musicians to play the flute as his main instrument, Anderson was a physically energetic and flamboyant showman. His image has changed over the years, but Jethro Tull are still very much alive, and are a well respected and influential survivor from the 60s.
