National Treasures

When The Who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio in 1990, it was because they were “Prime contenders, in the minds of many, for the title of World’s Greatest Rock Band.”  So there.  It’s official, not just my opinion.

On top of that, shortly before their performance at IOW1970, The Who recorded and released “Live at Leeds”, described by the New York Times as “the best live rock album ever made”.  Again, not just my opinion.

The Leeds University Refectory is now officially a National Monument with its own blue plaque on its red brick wall identifying it as the place where the legendary concert occurred which led to “the most celebrated live album of its generation”.

I wonder if there’s a blue plaque at Afton Down?  I doubt it, but there should be.  Perhaps we could get the place onto the World Heritage list as a site of great cultural significance, instead.

 • Could not agree more Peter, a blue plaque at Afton is long overdue and about time a campaign was launched to set one up. After all the Woodstock site now has one and many historians now agree that the crowd was bigger at the IOW event. The 40th anniversary is a great time to get some recognition for this historic site, and although the field itself is in constant use for farming, surely Afton Down would be a suitable place?

 • Ooopss, I posted this comment in the wrong place, I’m putting it here again:
I beleive that Afton Down is under the National Trust. Some people had tryed to get a kind of memorial there and has been rejected. I feel that the 1970 festival is a taboo subject on the island.
